In this discussion paper, Don Pinnock outlines the history and problems of South Africa’s current criminal justice system. These include the detrimental affects of incarceration, the lack of healing for victims, and the lack of addressing community needs. In a very precise manner, he outlines the restorative view of justice and how this should be implemented in South Africa. This includes alternatives to incarceration, involvement of community level institutions, and the roles of the police.
