In this article, John Kennedy gives practical information for parents on the Youth Diversion Program in Canada for youth offenders. When a young person between the ages of twelve and eighteen commits a first-time, non-violent offense, often the youth is diverted to a Youth Diversion Program. It is designed to be a pre-charge, pre-court program to ensure there is no criminal record, if the program is successfully completed by the youth. The diversion program involves offender accountability and responsibility, victim-offender mediation, and a contract for community service by the youth.
