Restorative justice not only offers an important pathway for innovation in dealing with crime, it also has potentials for a deep impact on broader criminological theory, research and policy influence.
Reasons for this are its ‘normalising’ view on crime, victims and criminals; its reintroduction of ethics and emotions in the debate; its challenge for the traditional criteria in evaluative research; its appeal for qualitative research; its involvement and possible impact on practice and policy with regard to crime and safety issues.
All these reasons, however, also point to specific vulnerabilities of the restorative justice research and practice which must be taken into account. (author’s abstract)
